A barcode reader is an electronic device for reading printed barcodes. Barcode reader also called as barcode scanner, which is used to capture and read information contained in a barcode. A barcode reader consists of a scanner, a decoder, and a cable. The cable is used to connect the barcode reader to a computer through a serial port or USB port. The decoder is either built in or connected externally.
The barcode reader directs a beam of light across the barcode and measure the amount of light reflected back. The dark part of a barcode absorbs light and white spaces reflect light. The scanner converts this light energy into electrical energy, and then the decoder converts this electrical energy into data and forwards this data to a computer.
