>> Tuesday, February 14, 2012

A scanner is a device that translates data on a sheet of paper to a form that can be stored on a computer.
The basic function of a scanner is to convert a document to a digital format. You can thus convert a hard copy i.e. data on a paper to soft copy i.e. files on your computer. Data can be in the form of text or graphics. In the absence of scanners you would have to type the document.

Different types of scanners are used for different applications. The capability and cost of scanners differ from type to type. The scanners required for industrial purposes are different from scanners meant for use at home or in small offices. You can scan large sheets of paper or books with large scanners. smaller scanners can be used to scan photos or small pages.

 Flatbed Scanners

Flatbed scanners are also known as desktop scanners. Flatbed scanners are the most widely used. A flatbed scanner is similar to a photocopy machine in appearence.

Sheet Fed scanner

A sheet-fed scanner is used for scanning continuous sheets of paper. This type of scanner is very versatile in scanning loose sheets of paper. However, it cannot scan bound documents.

Slide Scanners

You can scan photo slides with the help of a slide scanner. The use of slide scanners thus enables people to digitalize photographs. In this way, photographs can be stored on the computer. You can also restore old slides with the help of slide scanners.

Drum Scanners

Drum scanners are used for high quality applications. These scanners use a Photomultiplier Tube (PMT). photomultiplier tube is a vacum tube that converts light into electrical energy. The drum scanners are much more costly than the other types of scanners.
